Coffee's potcakes need your help to survive

WHEN popular local personality Floyd ‘Coffee’ Selver died last week it was not just the lives of his family and friends that were affected – his seven potcake dogs were left homeless.

Soon after his death on Lower Bight Road on Monday, August 6, the Turks and Caicos Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TCSPCA) received a number of calls from concerned members.

They said that Coffee had owned seven potcakes that were now in desperate need of food, water and a place to live.

Susan Blehr and Louise Henderson from the TCSPCA immediately went to find the dogs and began to feed them and provide them with water.

But now they need the help of the public to help them in looking after the dogs to make sure that they do not suffer unnecessarily from the death of their owner.

“As you know we receive many calls every day to help numerous other animals in distress,” Susan, executive director of the TCSPCA, said.

If you would like to help by either donating dry and canned dog food or actually helping with the feeding of the dogs contact the TCSPCA office as soon as possible.

Staff will put together a weekly feeding schedule to make sure the animals are properly looked after.

“Unfortunately some of the older dogs are not in great shape,” Susan said.

“One has a broken back leg so gets around on three legs and one of the smaller pups has an injury on one of her back legs - none of the dogs have been spayed or neutered.

“We are not sure about the future for these dogs as the older ones will no doubt have heartworm and we think that one of the older females is pregnant.”

The next step of the TCSPCA is to have all the animals assessed by a vet to determine the state of their health.

“Also we are trying to determine who will be responsible for the dogs if they need to be
released over to the TCSPCA,” Susan said.

“Thank you in advance for any help you can offer with making sure that these dogs receive sufficient food and water until we can determine their future.”
