2011 TCSPCA Annual Dog Show
Dog Show Deemed a 'Barking Success'
Turks and Caicos Weekly News
Peaches, owned by Andrea Piche, took the coveted Blue Ribbon for Best in Show on Saturday, July 2nd at the 7th annual Turks and Caicos Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, ( TCSPCA) Dog Show. Despite torrential rains early in the day, the parade of pooches posing in the ring was a huge success. Held ‘under the Big Top’ at Turtle Cove Marina, the event was supported by crowds of proud dog owners, friends, and family who cheered them on.
This year there were seven events, plus the Best In Show, in which potcakes and breeded dogs strutted their stuff. Large dogs, and very small dogs, fluffy dogs and dogs dressed in ribbons or caps or bows vied for Best Trick, Waggiest Tail, Dog the Judges Wanted to take Home Most, and other categories. Missing this year was the famous Obstacle Course. We hope it will be back next year.
The new scheduled start of 3 pm saved contestants and their owners from the earlier downpour and the heat of midday. The crowds cheered their favourites, visited the various tables to buy food and drink (served up by the Tike Hut Restaurant), T-shirts and raffle tickets. The raffle prizes, 17 in all, were fabulous, including an Islandcom Blue Flash phone with $200 of service, dinners for two at many famous Provo eateries, nights at luxury resorts, a signed copy of Keith Richard’s autobiography, beach cruises, and more.
One little dog made his mark on more than one occasion, thinking that time in the ring was time to relieve himself. Spectators and judges roared.
The Platinum (Lead) Sponsor of the 2011 event was PPC Ltd., who’s senior meter reader, Donnie Stubbs, was a judge. Donna Doran - Pampered Paws, Peggy Perkins – T & C Veterinary Associates and Donald Astwood - Scotia Bank and owner of a former Best in Show, were the other judges.
Graceway IGA, Pedigree Dog Food and Turtle Cove Marina were the Gold sponsors, providing dog food, goodie bags and the venue for the show. All the sponsors have been backed this show and the TCSPCA for many years. Their generosity has made it possible for the organization to continue to provide affordable spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and outreach programs each year.
Guests of Honour – Allan Robinson of PPC and Heather Forbes, founder of the Potcake Foundation, which raises money for the TCSPCA and other potcake charities, were on hand to award the prizes.
It was clearly a day for family, with many children proudly showing their pets. The Enid Capron Primary School Steel drum band opened the show, and students and their owners, in the Pampered Paws obedience classes, gave a terrific half time demonstration.
The Annual Dog Show is a principal fundraiser for the TCSPCA, which helps all animals of the Turks & Caicos. They have just opened a chapter in Grand Turk, and Ginny flew from the capital island to emcee the event.
This was a community event which, paws down, was a huge success. Thanks to everyone for sponsoring, competing and joining in the fun. See you next year.
